Terrabil
Gorlois' principal stronghold. Even though Malory styles Gorlois as the duke of
Tintagil, it is likely that Tintagil was used in this manner so as to strengthen the significance of the place of Arthur's
begetting. By choosing Terrabil from which to wage his war, Gorlois shows that Tintagil was not a significant fortress for
war, but a smaller site that could be easily defended. Dimilioc is a great encampment of three fortified concentric ramparts
and ditches about 5.5 miles southwest of
Tintagel. The remains of a fortress, possibly of the right time period, would fit Malory's details of the story.
