King Arthur in Hollywood

Perceval (1978) Subtitled in English DVD
VHS
This unique theatrical version of the tale of Perceval
was adapted by Rohmer from Chrétien de Troyes' unfinished Count of the
Grail. Rohmer blends ancient theater, medieval painting, sculpture, music, and
prose in a beautifully stylized film narrated in couplets by a chorus of singers
and accompanied by musicians playing traditional instruments - all in old French.
Fabrice Luchini as Perceval is the perfect innocent, ignorant but well-meaning,
raised in isolation, and determined to become a knight. Rohmer creates his image
with metal sculptures, storybook cardboard castles, and backdrop paintings of
the landscape. The Passion Play with Perceval symbolizing the Christ provides
the viewer with a unique vision.
